Fourth Air India Bombing Memorial Site in Montreal, Canada!

The final memorial site dedicated to the victims of the bombing of Air India Flight 182 on June 22, 1985 has been decided by the Canadian government officials recently. Two of the memorial sites were already unveiled in Toronto and Vancouver, while a site in Ottawa was rededicated for the victims. The fourth memorial site is slated to be unveiled in Montreal, Canada.

The bombing of the Air India plane in 1985 was the worst mass murder in Canadian history. The terrorist attack killed a total of 329 people. The flight from Montreal to Delhi, which originated in Vancouver exploded and crashed off Ireland on taking the lives of many, marking the deadliest terrorist target, as far as the North American country is concerned.

The new memorial site will be built on the Monk Island in Montreal. On the unveiling of the site, the Canadian immigration minister summoned the gathering, where families and relatives of the sufferers of the said incident were present. While addressing the gathering, the minister said that while the memorial site will keep people reminding the victims of the horrific incident, and that Canada is not invulnerable to terror attacks.

In addition, the country’s immigration minister also assured that the government will set out some plan of roadmap in order to ensure that incidents like the air India bombing does not appear in future. The plan of making the roadmap will make the inquiry report presented by John Major, the former justice of Canadian Supreme Court as its foundation. The report said that incapability existed in Canadian national security system.

As suggested by then Supreme Court justice, Canada should strengthen its national security by setting out revamped security policies. Even though Canada has beefed up its national security system, many of the recommendations presented by the justice are yet to materialize.
