Canada follows stringent travel and border measures to curb coronavirus spread, including a mandatory 14-day quarantine for everyone returning to the country. With the new and potentially more transmissible variant coming up, Canada’s government puts further testing and quarantine requirements for international travelers entering the country through air or land ports of entry for Canada immigration purpose.

Though the Canadian border is closed for non-essential travel amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is open for a particular group of people and individuals. If you are planning to visit Canada or going back to your home in Canada, there are specific requirements you must fulfill before entering Canada. It’s worth noting that Canada still imposes a travel ban on people entering Canada for tourism purposes.

You can travel to and enter Canada if you’re a

  • Canadian citizen
  • dual Canadian citizen with a valid Canadian passport or special authorization
  • permanent resident of Canada
  • person registered under Canada’s Indian Act
  • protected person
  • Like United States (US) citizens, foreign nationals can travel to Canada only if they are eligible

If you are driving to Canada

 To enter Canada through a land border crossing, make sure you do the following:

  • Check if there are any provincial or territorial travel restrictions. You may check the province or territory website of your destination to know about regulations and quarantine requirements.
  • Make sure you have a suitable plan for quarantine, which must include:
    • stay for 14 days or possibly longer
    • have access to the necessities of life, including water, food, medication, and heat without leaving quarantine
    • can avoid contact with others who did not travel with you
    • have no visits from family or guests
    • Fulfill pre-entry test requirements. Regardless of citizenship, all travelers five years or above must submit a negative Covid-19 test result report. 
  • Register in advance for your arrival in Canada.
  • Submit your travel-related information through Arrive Can. 

Arriving to Canada at a Land Border Entry Point 

  • Have your ArrivaCan receipt, Covid-19 negative test result, and quarantine plan ready for assessment.
  • Get your arrival and Day-10 test kits.
  • Travelers will be provided two COVID-19 test kits: one to use on the day they arrive in Canada and another to use on day 10 of their 14-day quarantine.
  • Go directly to the destination where you plan to quarantine yourself.

If you are flying to Canada 

  • Have your ArriveCAN receipt and pre-entry test results ready to provide to the airline
  • Check the requirements to board flights to and within Canada.
  • Travelers won’t be able to board the flight if they:
    • have symptoms of COVID-19 unless they have a medical certificate stating that their symptoms are not COVID-19 related or
    • have been refused boarding in the past 14 days due to a medical reason related to COVID-19 or
    • Subject to a provincial or local public health order
  • additionally, foreign nationals cannot enter Canada if they’re traveling from a country other than the United States
