Australia Shifts Focus from Limiting Immigration!

Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia seems to have changed tracks. She is all set to give away her plans on limiting immigration or the Australian visas. This came about after a recent report indicated that it is probably difficult to escape Australian immigration which seems to be strong in the near future.

Initially, the Prime Minister has brought about a proposal to reduce immigration to Australia. This came about during her election campaign. The main aim was to evade all projections regarding the constantly increasing population of the nation. It was being estimated that the population of Australia would increase to 36 million by 2050.

However, a Treasury briefing has brought out that this prediction has been brought about considering a substantial reduction when it comes to immigration. This implies a strong growth in population cannot be evaded.

According to a senior government source, it seems that the government has accepted the fact that it is not ready to limit immigration and to such an extent which is required to control the growth of population.

The Treasury recommends the Australian government to plan ahead for the growth of population in the future instead of controlling migration. This is because it is not necessary that the strong growth in population would be unsustainable. Large numbers might not have an adverse impact on the infrastructure, service delivery and above all the environment and the standards of living in the cities. However, apt measures along with right planning are a must which should be implemented now itself.

It has been indicated by Wayne Swan, the Australian Treasurer that with the low levels of unemployment, there needs to be a shift in the focus from capping migration to focusing on the skill shortages in the nation.
