The system allows to assess and select the prospective skilled immigrants under various economic programmes, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Programme (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Programme (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Certain Provinces and territories will also be able to select applicants from the Express Entry system to meet the demand of the labor market needs.

The system is a point based electronic programme and consists of two major steps–the first step includes creating a online profile by answering simple set of questions, based on age, education, experience and language. Applicants are required to submit an ‘Expression of Interest’ stating why, they wish to live and work in the nation. Those– who successfully meet the criteria for any of the aforementioned economic programmes–are successfully placed in the ‘Express Entry Pool’.

Second step will include evaluation of potential candidates based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Each applicant may score a maximum of 12,00 points on the basis of their human capital. Applicants with high points are likely to be issued an ‘Invitation to Apply’.

Those with a valid job offer or a provincial/territorial nomination are likely to score high points. But, applicants with a job offer or a provincial/territorial nomination may register themselves with the ‘Job Bank’–an initiative designed to create a link between Job givers and job seekers.
