Professor Sir Al Aynsley-Green, Children’s Commissioner for England, has called for an end to the detention of youngsters, emphasizing on the statement that “IT IS NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN!” Pointing out at Yarl’s Wood Centre in Bedfordshire, he elaborated that so many young children are kept in the detention centers for long intervals, which proves immensely harmful for them.
He said that he would see that the detention of youngsters is culminated. In the recent report released by the Commissioner, some instances point out in the direction that detention centers are really not meant for children.
In one case, a nurse failed to recognize the broken arm of a youngster, hence wasting twenty odd hours to take the child to the medical institution. In another case, a ten year old little girl affirmed that her hand head was splashed against the wall in an attempt to wake her up from the sleep. Sir Al expressed his worries that these incidents are treated or recorded in a proper manner. The instances show that detention centers do not treat the children in a human way.
Sir Al elaborated that there are various concerns that need to be addressed. Despite various improvements since the last year, the Commissioner said that he is more worried about the delays in offering treatment on required timelines.
He said that it is government’s duty to decide on various detention cases, but he would like to ensure that the process is humane!
