VANCOUVER: A former Surrey woman is facing Canada’s first immigration-related bigamy charge and has been accused of Sham marriage scam.
Jotika Ashni Reddy, 33, the woman in concern has been charged of tying knot with a man on Sep. 27, 2006 in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. Further accusations fell on her where she faced another accusation of marrying the second man in her life on Jan. 26, 2008 in nearby Delta. And this all happened when she had already tied the knot with a third man.
Reddy tried some ways so that she could provide sponsorship to two men so that they go on to have a PR Card in Canada. Both these men are overseas nationals.
According to Jenna Hyman, who is the federal Crown prosecutor, all these applicants applied for their PR Card in Canada on behalf of sham marriage in which they got themselves involved in.
Reddy has been accused of two counts of bigamy. Her other charges include two counts of knowingly misrepresenting or withholding material facts. Being a federal matter, all the cases on Reddy would be considered by the Federal court,
According to Faith St. John, who is the spokes person for Canada Border Services Agency, this is the first casein which charge of bigamy has been inculcated in Canada.
In accordance with the documents which are registered in the Civil Court, Reddy is a resident of Edmonton and worked as a maintenance worker.
