Based on the statistics from the demographic consulting firm, Macroplan Australia, it is expected that migrants from Indian sub-continent would account for one of the largest communities in Australia in coming fifteen years. It is believed that with the increasing number of migrants from Europe and Asia, basically from India and China would outcast the Australia-born community. According to media reports, by 2025, Australia-born families would end up as minority group, if the immigration influx follows the prevailing pattern.
Reportedly, overseas migrants to Australia came mostly from Britain, followed by New Zealand, India, China, South Africa and the Philippines. According to experts, foreign immigrant families will overtake the locally born community in coming fifteen years, much earlier than expected previously.
As per the 2006 census stats, overseas born population (including people with one of their parents born abroad) in Australia accounted for 40 percent of the nation’s total population. If the immigration pattern remains the same, the figure is expected to increase over 50 percent by 2025. Australia’s current population is 22 million and it is expected to reach 36 million by 2050. It would be a real challenge for the nation’s first ever population minister, Tony Burke to manage the wave of immigrants to Australia.
According to a survey conducted among 3,000 Australians, majority is not in favor of huge influx of immigrants, while experts and demographers think that immigrants are a major contributor to the nation’s culture and economy.
