Emphasizing the importance of immigration, and its contribution to the growth and development of a country/city, the Mayor of London has reportedly stated that the UK capital city can only prosper if it continues to have a pro-migrant approach. However, he also added that, after the migrants arrive, it is essential that they are passionately motivated to integrate into the UK society.
The mayor compared the capital to the two city states in ancient Greece, namely, Athens & Sparta. He proclaimed that London should emulate the example of Athens, instead of Sparta, in case it wants to survive & flourish. As added that while Athens was an open city, Sparta was not very people friendly. They were adversaries for domination in the Aegean during the fifth century BC. They were incredibly different people with different approaches to overseas individuals.
Sparta was a hostile state with not much love and passion for poetry or the arts even as it was a strict society committed to war. The Spartan State was so aggressive that numerous citizens lost their lives in combat. Since it was very tough for foreigners to gain citizenship, the citizens’ number began to head south.
The situation reached such a state that by the fourth century BC, the city-state’s slaves heavily and decisively outnumbered the citizens even while the Spartans feared upheaval. The population became so undersized that Sparta failed to put-off the emergence of the Macedonian empire. Soon Alexander the Great managed to triumph over the known world.
On the other hand, Athens was a comparatively more open society. Allegedly, during the sixth century BC, a well-known Athenian statesman urged foreigners to reside in the city and made those, who arrived, citizens. The presence of the residents from abroad assisted the Athenian business develop leading to the increased prosperity and the blossoming of the Athenian philosophy & arts.
