As per the news sources, an undocumented migrant was involved in a car crash which led to the death of a nun. An investigation has been ordered by Janet Napolitano, the Secretary for Homeland Security. The main reason behind this investigation is to find out why the illegal continues to live in the US especially when he has already been arrested twice for offences pertaining to drunken driving.
Carlos Montano was drunk when he hit into three nuns. This was in Bristow in Virginia where the nuns were a few miles away from a monastery to attend an annual retreat. One of the nuns died on the spot where as the other two have been hospitalized.
In earlier cases where Montana was arrested, he was released due to his conscious and also with the procedure pertaining to his deportation still pending. This was because he was as yet not convicted of any violent crimes such as rape, robbery or murder.
Questions are now being raised as to why this illegal has been released when he was already arrested in prior for committing offences. The immigration officials are now being criticized for handling such a case poorly. Previously, he was arrested for the same offence of speeding, reckless driving and for being drunk in the public. For this, he was imprisoned for twenty days in 2009. Montana is all of 23 years and now has been pressed upon with charges of manslaughter involuntary. However, it is not yet known whether he has hired a defense lawyer.
This incidental clearly raises the debate on illegal immigration all over again with a fresh spark. At the same time, as per the Department of Homeland Security, most of the immigrants who have been involved in some form of crime have been deported when looked into the record of the last eighteen months.
However, more initiatives need to be taken. It has also been said that the Congress has understaffed and limitedly funded the immigration enforcement.
