According to a recent report, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Stephen Harper and the President of United States, Barack Obama made an announcement that very soon flying from Canada to US will become much faster and easier than before.
In this connection, the immigration officials of Canada have said that in early February, 8 airports of Canada will allow the Canadian nationals to use their Nexus cards as their identity proof to speed up the process of security clearance at the US border crossings, who are frequent travelers.
The Nexus card is basically provided to the low-risk, pre-approved travelers into the US and Canada at designated land, air and marine entry ports. While going by air, Nexus helps in faster security clearance at border by allowing the card holders to enter into the nation easily by using self-service kiosks. Travelers with Nexus cards will be allowed to go through faster screening lines, presently offered only on a few number of international and domestic flights.
Michelle Rempel, the Calgary MP, was quoted as saying that the Government is expecting more people to take the advantage of this new policy and thus, the number border crossing people will increase. He also added that Canada nationals are allowed to apply for Nexus card and approved applicants will have access to expedite, designated security lines for US flights.
The particular program will be applicable at the eight largest airports of Canada, namely: Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. However, Nexus cards already have been in restricted use for domestic and selective foreign flights.
Apart from all these, this program will also eliminate the need for duplicate screening of baggage for the coming 3 years, so that the travelers flying from Canada airports with pre-clearance US facilities will not have to go for their bags screened once more at the connecting airport of US.
