Two brothers, who were charged of assaulting a group of Indians in the year 2008, will not allocate any further time in the detention center, Victorian county court Judge Christine Thornton affirmed on 17th February.
The duo has already spent almost a year in the detention center. Though the Judge called the incident as “extraordinarily grave,” she confirmed that as the accused were children, and they would not be jailed for the incident further.
The duo were involved in a callous attack on a group of Indians, leaving many of them brutally injured, including one who suffered permanent injuries in the brain.
According to AAP reports, the older sibling hit Sukhraj Singh with a wood stick, leaving him to suffer various head and face fractures. The younger sibling started the assault by making racial comments on the group and asking whether they are “DESI” OR “SINGH.”
Reports say that the brothers were confined for one year in a youth detention center but were freed early.
Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) had asked the Country Court to re-sentence the duo, with Chief crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC calling the 12 month sentence as “manifestly inadequate.” He went on to say that there has been an involvement of racial motive in the attack. He also confirmed that the attack involved the usage of weapons.
This news is forcing everyone to think whether the Australian government is doing ample justice to the victims of these racial attacks?
