The Malaysian Home Ministry is conducting an investigation into likely power abuse and resource mismanagement by the Immigration Department and the police. This investigation came about after both the agencies were reported to being hauled into a domestic dispute.
This investigation came about after a woman claimed to be harassed by both the law enforcement agencies in two different instances that took place between November last year and July this year.
The woman in question is 51 years of age and a single mother. She said that the incident happened at her son’s apartment which led her to lodge a police report against her estranged husband in September 2009. Her businessman husband is a millionaire based in New Zealand. He was a former civil servant in Malaysian. He had threatened her.
In the police report, the woman has claimed that 8 policemen from the Kaula Lumpur Federal Police Narcotics division came to the apartment and constantly asked her to open the door. However, they refused to tell her the intentions of their visit. She opened the gate only when they threatened to break open the lock.
These men walked in the house and performed a cursory search. Then, their tone suddenly changed to utmost politeness saying that the house was raised because they had received a complaint about drugs being present in the house.
Similarly, in July, eight Immigration officials asked to her to let them in her house and then started questioning about who lived in the house. She said that these officials also did not let out their purpose of visit and simply walked around the house.
It has been confirmed by the sources in the government that such raids were performed. However, the legitimacy of the raid is being investigated. The police and the immigration department are investigating into the issue but details cannot be provided as yet. So, it is obvious that many officers have already been questioned in this regard.
