Life is playing tough with Canada based Gary Freeman aged sixty one years as his appeal to allow him to come back to his home country has been refused by the Canada Immigration Department. Gary freeman was accused of shooting a Chicago police officer and to save himself from the police, he fled to Toronto. There he lived for thirty four years but he was again caught in 2004 and since then he has been kept inside the jail in the United States.
Freeman wants to come back to Canada to see his newly-born grandson and his family. But owing to his connections with Black Panthers (a defunct militant African-American organization) he is not allowed to enter the country for security reasons. After shooting the police officer, he jumped his bail and escaped to Toronto and started living there with new identity as Joseph Pannell.
It’s been now five months that Freeman has been released from the Illinois jail and since then he is denying his connection with Black Panthers. And he also said that his shot to the officer was an act of self-defence and not an intentional one. He requested the Immigration Department to allow him to enter the country to attend the funeral of his father-in-law but his request was refused by them.
Speaking in favor of him, NDP immigration critic Olivia Chow said that Freeman had his share of punishment and there is no reason that he should not be allowed to come back to Canada. He must be allowed to visit his family members on the grounds of humanity and compassion.
