UK Universities Skeptical of Immigration Cap!

It is a known fact that many academicians and authorities in the University are concerned about the immigration cap to be introduced next year in the United Kingdom. It is being feared that the sudden reduction of international students might have drastic effects on universities.

It was mentioned by the Migration Advisory Committee that the reduction would cater to about 80 percent of net migration. About 196,000 was the total figure for net immigration and would have been catered to by students and family reunions. The above anticipation led to protests from universities as per whom the inflow of international students would be affected, especially from those coming from nations outside the European Union. This would be despite the government concentrating only on those students who have enrolled for courses which are equivalent to that of a degree level study.

On the other hand, British Prime Minister David Cameron says that this is possible to cut down on total migration and stated that he is committed to bringing down the total numbers by almost half. At the same time, there are many who have been abusing the student route to get into the nation. So, if these unwanted irritants in immigration are handled, it would not be very difficult to bring down the numbers.

It was also recommended by the Migration Advisory Committee that there must be a reduction in the number of visas under the Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs which caters to skilled workers. For 2011-12, these visas should cater to between 13 to 25 percent.

However, when it comes to the universities in UK, they feel that the established competitors of these universities along with catering to the further development of systems in higher education would also be competing for talent. If such migration limits have bound on them, it would be difficult for them to compete for talent.
