It has been recently revealed that the total cost of defending the immigration law in Arizona has reached at US$ 1 million. This figure was reached by July itself. As per the information from the governor’s office in Arizona, the legal costs have gone beyond US$ 1 million for the period from May 2010 till July end. This law was introduced in May 2010.
In order to pay for the legal costs for the state, the money was borrowed from the legal-defense fund under Brewer who is the Governor of Arizona. This fund had recently received US$ 3.7 million from more than forty thousand people in different parts of the United States.
As of now, the Governor is busy fighting to ensure that the law continues to stay in effect. The main aspect here is that a court ruling has prevented some of the key provisions in the law from being implemented.
According to this law, the local law enforcement agencies would be given the authority of immigration agents. In other words, the police would have the right to check the immigration status and even detain those under suspicion. They can ensure that the suspected immigrant has the relevant documentation which proves him to be a legal migrant in the nation.
On the other hand, this law has also been described as a form of discrimination as it would invite racial profiling. Janet Napolitano, the Secretary for Homeland Security agreed to the ruling made by the court which has blocked the provisions in the law. She said that the nation cannot have fifty different teams of enforcement throughout the nation.
Governor Jan Brewer is appealing the court ruling to cater to the complete implementation of this law.
