Australia is going to open once closed immigration center in order to accommodate asylum seekers from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Recently, the nation’s immigration minister announced that the Australia is considering restarting the immigration center at the Curtin Air Base.
The Curtin Air Base detention center was once being closed in 2002 by the nation’s previous conservative government. The center was allegedly shut down after riots cropped up with the violence against detainees at the center, as well as the inability of the authorities to handle the increasing number of asylum seekers.
The news of re-opening the detention center came across as a relief for the refuge seekers from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, as Australia is no longer into processing claims from both the nations. In fact, the step of restarting the accommodation is the result of the Australia’s decision to hold off the applications for refuge seekers from the two countries.
The Curtin Air Base facility is located in the Western Australia. The immigration center was used for the same purpose years back, however, with the re-opening, it is expected to get some upgradation. According to plans, first single male asylums seekers from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka would be transferred from Christmas Island, where there is overflowing of immigrants. Along, another portion of asylum seekers would be shifted to Darwin and group of children to South Australia in order to tackle the situation on Christmas Island.
