The Essential Skills in Demand Lists in New Zealand are the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) and the Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL). The Long Term Skill Shortage List, which is often referred as the LTSSL constitutes the occupations where the country job sectors are facing shortage of skilled workers in the current scenario, both globally and throughout the Kiwi land. Individuals who secure employments in any of the listed areas are usually issued with a permit to work as per the Long Term Skill Shortage List Work to Residence Policy. If the applicants applying for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category possess an employment offer, alongside educational qualifications and work experience in any area of occupations facing ongoing labor shortage (listed on the skill shortage list) are offered with bonus points on their applications. The LTSSL is utilized for both temporary work policy and residence policy.

The Immediate Skill Shortage List, commonly referred as ISSL comprises of the occupations that face an immediate skill shortage in the country on Kiwis. This list is instrumental in facilitating the approval of temporary work permits. Individuals who possess a job offer in any occupation listed on the ISSL, they are likely to be offered with temporary work permits.

The ITSSL and ISSL are designed to attract only for significant skill shortages in New Zealand. These lists do not cater to seasonal or lower labor shortages in the country. Do remember: when skilled workers enter New Zealand based on fulfilling all the requirements as per the LTSSL, they can be eligible to obtain residency through the country’s very policy called ‘Work to Residence Policy/skilled Migrant Category. But, individuals cannot obtain residency if they enter the country based on fulfilling the ISSL requirements, since the list only caters to temporary workers.
