To attract the overseas investors, Canberra has made some big changes. The new rules have been introduced from July 1, 2015.  With regard to foreign investment, certain changes have been made to the Significant Investor Visa. As per the new changes, it requires an investment of 15 Million Australian Dollars, and once Permanent Residence Visa (PRV) is granted, the investor becomes eligible to apply for PR after one year of stay in the country.

As per their economic needs, the respective states and territories refer foreign investors for the Investor Visa. Once the investor is granted a permission to invest, they can apply for an Investor Visa using one of the many pathways.

However, under the new rules, the investors have been prohibited from making a direct investment in the residential real property though those who wish to make an indirect investment of less than 10% can do so.

Who is eligible to submit a petition?

The stream is ideal for the significant investors and business professionals who intend to make an investment, for a fixed period of four years. To be invited to apply, you must lodge an Expression of Interest (EoI).

Age of the applicant is an important requirement. You must be below 55 years of age at the time of submitting the application. Although a nomination from a state or territory can ease the requirement only if your proposed investment plan is of exceptional economic benefit in the respective region.

Furthermore, your final total on the Points Grid system must be of 65 points. Points are given on the basis of following factors age, language proficiency, education, experience, business turnover, personal assets, adaptability, etc.

To apply, you can choose one of the following five streams:

  1. Business Innovation Stream,
  2. Investor visa,
  3. Significant Investor Stream,
  4. Premium Investor stream, and
  5. Entrepreneur Stream.
