Vijay Kumar, an Indian who was arrested and detained in Houston for having Jihadi literature along with brass knuckles set has been quite disturbing, as per his lawyer, Grant Scheiner. The attorney has been worried about that his client might be detained for months together before he could be presented for a trial in front of a judge. Mr. Scheiner said that he does not want to blame the FBI for responding in such a way. But instead, he wants them to link the spots in this case.

Kumar is a documentary filmmaker by profession. He stopped by in the US on his way to Canada was found and caught at the airport. It is said that the authorities found him sweating and fidgeting while standing in the security line. To this, Mr. Scheiner said that the weather in Houston has been quite hot lately which is makes it quite surprising to why Kumar would not sweat. He said that he has no clue why the federal officials intervened especially when Kumar was not on the FBI list neither he was on the list of no-fly.

As of now, there does not seem any form of guarantee on the number of days that Kumar would be detained. With this, there seem to be no chances that the judge in immigration court would let him go soon even after being released on bail. Even if has been granted freedom, he would not be permitted to leave the country since he had to submit his passport. Since such trials often take months to conclude, he would have to live in the nation for a longer duration. At the same time, he does not know anyone in the nation.

When arrested, Kumar reaction was confusion and concern at the same time because he is not very fluent in English. However, he speaks good Hindi. Above all, if Kumar is innocent, some of the precious days of his life would have been wasted for a trial which would turn out to be completely worthless. Of late, the Supreme Court in the United States declared that Jose angel Carachuri-Rosendo, an immigrant from Mexico, who was found guilty of a drug crime, which could be termed as secondary drug case, is not entitled to be sent back to Mexico. He was condemned of bearing a capsule of Xanax without the recommendation of a medico. The drug is used to treat anxiety. Now, the court has decided that he is not subject to automatic deportation from the US.

The convicted is a legal resident in the US since the year 1993. He was entitled to deportation earlier for two crime instances who he had committed in Texas. In the year 2004, Carachuri-Rosendo pleaded guilty to the possession of more than one pound of marijuana, for which he was awarded with a jail sentence up to 20 days. The following year, he was again founded guilty of possessing one anti-anxiety drug tablet, Xanax without a prescription. For this offense, he had already served a jail sentence of up to 10 days.

According to the US federal administration, the second instance of bearing a Xanax should be regarded as a major crime under federal law, for which he should be subjected to deportation. But the Justice John Paul Stevens disapproved the federal administration’s opinion saying that even though the conviction could have been regarded as federal crime, however, that should not be entitled to automatic deportation. Stevens also asserted that the prosecutor of the Carachuri-Rosendo case did not alleged the latter as a repeat offender. This is one of the reasons why the court did not consider the conviction as a drug crime that should be subjected to automatic deportation.

As per the new private figures, Indians make up for third largest immigrant community in the United States, net to immigrants from Mexico and Philippines. The US houses about 1.6 million India-origin people in present day. The figure has outdone the number of immigrants from China and Hong Kong between 2007 and 2008. According to the Migration Policy Institute, Indian-origin immigrants beat the immigrants from China and Hong Kong for the first time since 1960.

The level of immigration from India to the United States grew up in the 1990s and 2000s. Moreover, Indian-origin immigrants from many other countries like Canada, East Africa, Caribbean and UK contributed significantly to the figure.

Recent survey has revealed that about 11 million immigrants are now in the U.S. unlawfully. These consist of Mexicans which cater to 56% and another 22% from other Latin American countries. These immigrants settle and start working in major states such as California, Texas, and Arizona as illegal immigrants. This has become an issue of high debate in the United States, affecting the economy of the nation.

The already settled Americans from middle class status are the most effected, as it is importing poverty and taking jobs away from them. An illegal immigrant coming from an underdeveloped and a poor country will be willing to work at a lower salary which attracts the companies to hire them as ‘cheap labor’. This effects the middle class Americans who either have to accept the job with small pay packages (which an immigrant will be receiving) or not accept it.

Rising terrorism in America has given rise to a suspicious environment under which illegal immigrants are the targets of suspect.

All these factors have contributed towards stricter immigration laws by the United States for the betterment of its people. Minnesota has recently introduced a new immigration law to minimize the illegal infiltration into the country. The bill gives freedom to the officers to enquire about any person whom they suspect.

But this is a cause of worry for those Americans who look like Latin Americans and live in Duluth. This law puts them into the zone of suspects because of their Latino appearance which is like punishing them for a crime which they have not even committed. They can be questioned and enquired anytime on their American identity, even while going to some church or college. They always have to live in this fear that anytime they could be asked to produce their documents proving their American citizenship.

Since the population of illegal immigrants in America is up to 11 million which comprises of the cheap workers serving the American employers, it will be difficult to remove them. This will greatly affect the daily life of the American families where most of the servants come from poor or developing countries. Considering all these problems, it is important to come up with some method which would benefit everyone.

The number of US-born foreign people is growing over the recent years. According to reports, the immigrant population in the nation reached about thirty-eight million in the year 2008. The number constituted for about 12 percent of the United States’ total population. Besides, it is more than the total population of Canada. It clearly indicates how fast the immigrant population is growing in the US in recent years and this also crops up the issue how it affects the nation as a whole!

When we think about the affects of the growing number of immigrant population, many things come to our minds. One of those is the newly implemented Arizona bill. Many tend to think that, is increasing number of overseas-born population is a contributor to the growing tension over illegal immigration in Arizona, which eventually led to the controversial new legislation in the state? Apparently, Arizona is not one of those states in the United States, which have the most foreign-born residents. But, of late the state has witnessed some of the most unexpected increase of foreign born people since 1990. This has made Arizona’s population (foreign-born) to go over 900,000 from less than 300,000 over twenty years. This might be one of the reasons why the voters in Arizona agreed to vote for a law that has been criticized on large scale of late. And the law has been stimulating racial discrimination in the state.

Besides, California happens to be the state that has the highest number of foreign-born resident. Twenty-seven percent of the state’s total population, which accounts for nearly 10 million is born outside of America. Other states with large numbers of foreign-born residents include New York with 4.2 million; Texas with 3.9 million; and Florida with 3.4 million.

As a protest against the clamp down of illegal migrants in Arizona, the authorities from Los Angeles have finally confirmed of the ban regarding its business dealings with Arizona in the future. With this, LA is now the largest city in the United States which has enforced a boycott. At the same time, other cities and states are searching for answers to these protects as well as against the law.

According to the City Council members, around $8 million only in agreements with Arizona would be affected. Apart from this, $50 million worth of contracts would stay intact. However, it has been directed by the council for the heads of the city department to resist doing business in the future with Arizona or even those organizations with headquarters in the state. A vote in favor of the punitive measures by the City Council members was carried out. The end result was a vote of 13-1. With the above measures, all forms of travel would also be stopped.

The new immigration law in Arizona would be implemented from July end which gives the authority to the local police to act as immigration agents detaining anyone who looks suspicious.

As per a spokesperson from the Jan Brewer, the Arizona governor, this boycott would simply lead to more economic liabilities on the local people of Arizona. More so, the burdens on these people have also been due to the lack of efficiency by the government especially in securing the borders.

Many cities have given a thought to finding answers instead of protesting or boycotting against the law. Some such cities include Minnesota, San Francisco and Saint Paul.

Not much support has been offered for this new law. This is especially true for the borders of Mexico. The main reason behind this is that some cities have Hispanic communities which have been established for a very long time. This is especially true for Texas, California and New Mexico. Thus, such ideas are highly opposed specifically those similar to the 1990s.

Apart from the above, the public in general was found to be backing the immigration law of Arizona. As per a study which was brought out by the Pew research Centre, 73% of the 994 people surveyed support the main objectives of this law. This study was conducted from May 6th to May 9th.
